Although this picture may show sadness and lost hope, it still has its own way of showing hope. There is darkness in the room, along with stacks and stacks of dirty looking books. However, this man represents hope. In the midst of all the anti-semitism, he still sustains his Judaism and religion. He seems to be in a hiding place, such as an attic or basement. All these books show how Judaism is still going strong.
I think this picture represents sadness because here is an old man sitting in a cramped room full of siddurim and other Jewish books all alone. I think that he is waiting for someone to come up and use the books because obviously there aren't a lot of people needing to pray if all those books are stacked in a tiny attic. But on a brighter hand he's hopeful that the books will soon disappear quickly and people will start praying again. The photograph signifies a sense of sorrow and hope/faith.
Hello, this is Shelby and Reghan. This picture shows that people were still truly dedicated to praying in synagogue in the worst of times. The photographer questioned the synagogue's belief because there were only a few prayer books in the sanctuary, but the man in the picture proved to him that they still believed, but had to hide the extra books.

This picture is very interesting. It shows a man in the attic of an old synagogue. Before the Holocaust he might have gone to this synagogue. This picture is sad because they had to hide the siddurs in this room. This is also a sign of hope because it shows the man survived the Holocaust and he came back. This picture is relativly recent. It proves that we can come together and prove that the Jews are strong and powerful race. The man is so strong to me because he came back.
This picture is very interesting. it shows an old man in an attic/genniza of a very old synogogue. this photograph has a hint of not just sadness but also happiness and that even though all hope seems lost there is still a small bit of hope.
When I look at this picture the man seems very tired and sad, but when I think more about what I'm looking at there is this feeling of strength and history behind this picture of a geniza. The fact that all of these books of our culture and religion have survived and been preserved is very uplifting. To think that there are genizas full of old siddurim and tanachim all over the world is an awesome thought.
In the picture there is a guy who is sitting with all the old books. It shows how rich the Jewish culture was and how it is gone now. It shows that all the Jewishness is gone and there is only an old man there but how he still uses all those old books and is connected to the Jewish culture that used to be there. They still have the old Jewish culture there even if the people arent actually there.
this is very touching that there is so much Jewish life still alive in such a dwindling Jewish community. the fact that these people went through so much trouble to save all this tradition is so amazing. back right after world war 2 they had to hide all this from the Russians, because they were not freely allowed to practice Judaism. but through this all they still kept their religion going.
From Kolbey and Jenna. This photograph portrays how people were so intimidated by the communistic Russia. They were forced to hide their identity for their survival. The ancient texts were all they had left and their religion was fading. It is so sad how the helpless older man had to hide his religion. It is dark and he looks so cold. His face appears to have gone through alot. There is so much sorrow and insecurity with peers.

We really got a lot out of this picture. We think it shows a tremendous amount of commitment to Judism from this man. Even though the Communists were coming, they still cherished those books above all. They realized what was the most important thing: a Jewish future.
It looks like this man is dropping something off in a Geniza. The man looks old, and so do the books. It almost looks like he is hiding from something, like he is scared. It looks like he is in a basement, like a hidden Geniza. The man also looks very sad.
This picture shows a Synagogue in present Latvia. It shows how at one point the Synagogue was filled with people, and how now it is empty, except for a few people. The picture represents the once-populated Jewish area, and the contrast between now and then. The picture shows that Jewish life never left Latvia completely, and that Jewish life can continue.
Yes this picture is sad because they wer forced to hide all these books. Years of holy jewish literature cramped in a cold dark room. But it can also be viewed as a more happy picture. They are hopefull and their smart. Sure they hide the very writings that keep their religon alive but atleast they have them. In that cold dark room there is a warmth of our jewish religon. The hope that we dont have to hide our literature and that we can cherish and share it with our fellow Jew.
This photograph shows extreme sadness but also, extreme strengh. The man looks worn and sad, like the anchient books filling the attic. Its upsetting that the Jews had to hide their identities in the attic so the Communists wouldnt punish them for their spirituality. I feel extremely lucky to live in a society where differnt cultures are recongnized and celebrated. The fact that the Jews still lived and prayed in the anchient synagogue shows the extreme perserverece that the Jewish people have...
This picture is of a rabbi reading from an old, hidden sidur that is a symbol of the strength of the Jews. Even when the communists were against the Jews and thier religious beliefs the jews still kept praying they just did it secretivly. I think this picture shows how the Jews went to great lengths just to avoid other nations that were prejudice againt them, and they kept their own religious befiefs even when there seemed no point in doing so.
I think this picture represents hope and the old man keeps his faith in God. Even though people hate Jews all over this man still comes and studys Judaism.
This picture is very disappointing because those Jews had to actually hide their holy books and essentially hide their Judaism so that they would not be persecuted.
But it is actually sort of a good thing that all the books were saved.

This picture shows sadness. The room is dark and the man looks like he is upset about something. This picture was taken after the Holocaust in a geniza. The man in the picture went through so much, but was still able to believe in God and practice Judaism. All of the books around him show his dedication to his faith.

Hey everyone. This photograph has a hint of not just sadness but also happiness. The sadness is portrayed by the fact that there was so much persecution in this area, that Jewish books of studies had to be hidden away or buried in a Geniza. The happiness, however, is shown because even though there is not any free will in religion, these books are still kept in good condition. Have you or your family ever felt persecution? Has it ever effected you?
I think this photo shows how the old man is still connected with the old Jewish religion that used to be there. All of the books represents how strong the old jewish religion was, and now how there is no one to read them. But there are still a few Jews left that care about the Jewish religion and try to use the books and remember there past.
The Jews of Latvia are forbidden from worshipping and studying Tanach. So they hid their books in the attic of their synogoue. It so important that they are taking a stand, instead of giving up, even though it is against the law. This shows the connection Jews have with their learning.
This picture is very interesting because it shows the man still has faith in G-d, even though times look rough. It is a very cool picture.
This picture shows me how the Jews in Russia were forced to hide their existence. Their literature was their history, and the fact that they had to hide it all shows that they were scared. The room looks cold and dark, which makes stand out more and catch your attention.
For me this picture represents basically how Judaism has been lived for centuries. Anti-semitizm forces the Jews to hide their religion and traditions but a small part of it remains alive. I think it is really amazing how the people from the synagogue were able to save all those books. I feel very sad for the fact that that is the last synagogue they can go to.

i think,like you, that it is a sad picture but with a lot of hope.
i think this picture also shows the Jewish culture, i meen that in this place [synagogue or a library] there is a lot of books.

In this picture I can see a old men sitting in the room with a lot of books and I think that this is a symbol for the big connection that we have for our culture beacuse it dont make a difference If you have a lot of money or not beacuse you have to be like a human being first.

In this photo I see an old man sitting into a small room made by stone. This man is selling or writing books, as we see a lot of old books in this room. This photo present us the hard time that jewish in the diaspora passes through the years, when they needed to hide on those old stone cavern to sell or writing their holy books.

In this sad picture we can see an old man sitting in a small and dark room. he is selling some jewish books, I think.
The man seems in a bad situation, his clothes are very dirty.
But although that the picture is very sad, we can see that the man represents hope. it seems that he is accepting the situation that this his life and he doesn't care too much.
